Is your furnace making strange noises, leaving some rooms cold or emitting a burning smell? These are signs your furnace needs professional repair, not a DIY fix. Mankato Heating & Cooling is ready to help—contact us for expert service.

Warning Signs / Symptoms

Inconsistent Heating

Rooms may be cold in some areas and overly warm in others. This often signals a malfunctioning thermostat or blower motor issues, leading to discomfort and higher energy consumption if ignored.

Unusual Noises

If your furnace is making banging, clanging, or squealing sounds, it could indicate anything from a loose belt to failing motor bearings. Addressing these noises early can prevent more expensive repairs down the road.

Frequent Cycling

A furnace that turns on and off frequently could be suffering from a clogged filter, thermostat issues, or airflow restrictions. These can reduce efficiency and shorten the system's lifespan if not resolved.

Rising Energy Bills

Noticeably higher heating bills without increased usage can point to inefficiencies within the furnace due to worn-out parts or poor maintenance, leading to higher expenses and potential system failure.

Persistent Burning Smell

A continuous burning odor when your furnace is running may be due to dust buildup or an overheating component, both of which pose significant safety hazards like fire risks.

Common Causes

Dirty or Clogged Filters

Filters clogged with dust and debris restrict airflow and decrease system performance. Regular cleaning or replacement is essential for efficient operation.

Faulty Ignition System

When components like the pilot light or electronic igniter fail, the furnace can't start properly. Repair or replacement of these parts restores function.

Thermostat Malfunctions

Old or miscalibrated thermostats can lead to incorrect furnace communication. Calibration or replacement ensures accurate temperature control.

Wear and Tear from Harsh Winters

The extreme cold in South-Central Minnesota accelerates component wear, leading to failures. Regular inspections help catch these issues early.

Leaky Ductwork

Holes or poor connections in ductwork allow heated air to escape, reducing efficiency. Sealing or repairing ducts ensures effective warm air distribution.

Furnace Repair & Service questions

Why is my furnace blowing cold air?
The most common causes are a thermostat set to ON instead of AUTO, a dirty flame sensor, a tripped high limit switch from a clogged filter, or a pilot or ignitor that has failed. Some of these you can check yourself in a minute. If the burner is not lighting at all, call us before you keep resetting it.
How much does furnace repair cost?
It depends on the part. An ignitor or flame sensor is at the low end. A cracked heat exchanger or a failed inducer motor is at the high end. We diagnose first and give you the price before we start, so you can decide with real numbers in front of you.
Is it safe to run a furnace that keeps shutting off?
Not indefinitely. Repeated short cycling often points to overheating, a blocked flue, or a failing limit switch, and a cracked heat exchanger can leak carbon monoxide. If you smell gas or your CO alarm sounds, leave the house and call the gas utility first, then call us.
How long should a furnace last in Minnesota?
Fifteen to twenty years is typical here, though our heating season is long and that shortens the range. Once a furnace passes fifteen and needs a major part, replacement is usually the better value. We will give you both numbers rather than pushing one.
Do you work on my brand of furnace?
Yes. We are a Bryant Factory Authorized Dealer, but our NATE-certified technicians repair all major brands. You do not need to have bought the unit from us.
