Is your heat pump blowing cold air instead of providing warmth? Are you hearing strange noises coming from the unit or noticing a spike in your energy bills? These are signs your system needs professional attention. Heat pump issues are not just inconveniences; they can lead to higher costs and uncomfortable living conditions. Mankato Heating & Cooling is ready to help you tackle these challenges and restore comfort to your home.

Warning Signs / Symptoms

Insufficient Heating or Cooling

If your heat pump is running but not reaching the desired temperature, you may have a malfunctioning thermostat, a refrigerant leak, or blocked airflow. Ignoring this can lead to higher energy bills and further damage.

Unusual Noises

Clanking, rattling, or grinding noises from your heat pump might indicate loose parts, motor issues, or debris in the fan. Continuing to operate under these conditions can cause significant damage and result in costly repairs.

High Energy Bills

A sudden increase in energy bills without a change in usage often points to inefficiencies caused by clogged filters, refrigerant issues, or failing components. This not only strains your finances but also shortens the lifespan of your system.

Frequent Cycling

If your heat pump turns on and off too often, it could be due to a malfunctioning thermostat, refrigerant leaks, or an improperly sized unit. This frequent cycling adds wear and tear, reducing efficiency and system lifespan.

Ice Build-Up on the Unit

Ice forming on the outdoor unit even when not in defrost mode indicates problems with the defrost cycle, airflow issues, or refrigerant leaks. This can severely damage the system, leading to expensive repairs and loss of heating efficiency.

Common Causes

Clogged Air Filters

In South-Central Minnesota, agricultural activity can lead to dust and debris clogging air filters. Regular cleaning or replacement is necessary to maintain proper airflow and system efficiency.

Refrigerant Leaks

Leaks can occur from wear and tear or poor installation. Our technicians will locate and repair the leak, recharging the refrigerant to the appropriate level.

Faulty Thermostat

Age or electrical issues can cause thermostats to malfunction. Calibration, repair, or replacement ensures accurate temperature readings and control.

Defective Fan Motors

Overworked units can lead to burned-out fan motors. We inspect, clean, or replace the motor to keep your system running smoothly.

Electrical Component Failures

Power surges or wear can cause electrical components to fail. We conduct comprehensive diagnostics to replace faulty components and restore full functionality.

Heat Pump Repair & Service questions

Do heat pumps actually work in Minnesota winters?
Modern cold-climate heat pumps do, and they keep producing heat well below freezing. Most Minnesota homes pair one with a backup furnace for the coldest stretches. If yours is struggling above that range, something is wrong and worth a look.
Why is my heat pump running but not heating?
Common causes are a reversing valve stuck in cooling, low refrigerant, a frozen outdoor coil, or a defrost control that has failed. A heat pump that never comes out of defrost will blow cool air. These need a technician rather than a reset.
Is ice on my heat pump normal?
A light frost that clears during the defrost cycle is normal in winter. A thick sheet of ice that never melts is not. That usually means the defrost cycle has failed, and running it that way can damage the compressor.
How much does heat pump repair cost?
It depends on the failed component. Sensors and defrost boards are at the lower end. A reversing valve or compressor is at the higher end. We diagnose first and give you the price before any work begins.
Do you service ductless mini-splits too?
Yes. We repair both ducted heat pumps and ductless mini-split systems. Our technicians are NATE-certified and work on all major brands.
