AC Maintenance & Tune-Up

Is your AC blowing warm air or making strange noises? Our technicians ensure your system runs smoothly and efficiently again.

Is your air conditioning system blowing warm air instead of cool? Are strange noises or rising energy bills causing you concern? These are signs that your AC needs professional maintenance and tune-up. Ignoring these issues won’t make them go away, and more often than not, they require the expertise of a trained technician. At Mankato Heating & Cooling, our team is ready to ensure your system is back to optimal performance.

Warning Signs / Symptoms

Unusual Noises

If you're hearing banging, rattling, or squealing sounds from your AC unit, it's a sign something's off. These noises are often louder during startup or shutdown and can indicate loose components or worn-out fan belts. Left unchecked, they could lead to more severe issues requiring costly repairs.

Inconsistent Cooling

When some rooms in your home are cooler than others, or your AC cycles on and off without effectively cooling the space, you might have a problem. This typically points to issues with the thermostat, ductwork leaks, or a failing compressor, all of which can strain your system and inflate your energy bills.

Frequent Cycling

Short cycling, where the AC turns on and off more frequently than usual, wastes energy and shortens the system's lifespan. It can result from an oversized unit, refrigerant leaks, or a malfunctioning thermostat.

Increased Humidity

If your home feels clammy even when the AC is running, your system might not be removing enough moisture from the air. This could be due to a miscalibrated thermostat or refrigerant issues, leading to mold growth and decreased indoor air quality.

Rising Energy Bills

A sudden spike in your energy bills, without an increase in usage, often indicates your AC is working harder than necessary. This could be due to dirty coils, blocked airflow, or inefficient operation, all of which demand attention to prevent future mechanical failures.

Common Causes

Clogged Filters

Dust and debris accumulate over time in air filters, restricting airflow and making the system work harder. During a maintenance visit, cleaning or replacing these filters is a standard procedure to ensure optimal airflow and efficiency.

Refrigerant Leaks

Older systems or those lacking regular maintenance commonly suffer refrigerant leaks, which can diminish cooling power. Repairing these leaks and recharging the system is vital to restoring efficiency and preventing damage.

Faulty Thermostat

Inconsistent temperatures can be a result of a malfunctioning thermostat, especially in a region like South-Central Minnesota with frequent temperature swings. Calibrating or replacing the thermostat during a tune-up can improve system performance.

Dirty Coils

Over time, condenser and evaporator coils gather dirt and grime, particularly in dusty environments. Cleaning these coils during maintenance helps the system absorb and release heat effectively, boosting efficiency and longevity.

AC Maintenance & Tune-Up questions

How often should I service my air conditioner?
Once a year, ideally in spring before the first hot stretch. Annual service keeps the system running at the efficiency you paid for and catches small problems while they are still small. Most manufacturer warranties also require documented annual maintenance.
What is included in an AC tune-up?
We check refrigerant charge, clean the outdoor coil, test the capacitor and contactor, check the blower and filter, clear the condensate drain, and verify the temperature split across the coil. You get a written summary of what we found, including anything that is starting to wear.
Does a tune-up actually lower my electric bill?
It helps, though it will not rescue a failing system. A dirty coil and a low charge both make the unit run longer to reach the same temperature. Clearing those restores the efficiency the system was built for.
Do you offer a maintenance plan?
Yes. Our membership plan starts at $29 a month and covers annual equipment maintenance. It is one plan, not a set of confusing tiers. Ask us what it includes when we visit.
When is the best time to schedule?
Spring, before the first stretch of hot weather. That is when we have the most openings and when a problem found early is cheapest to fix. Call 507-299-0243 to get on the schedule.
